Michael Elkan : Artist Statement

email Facebook Twitter Other Social Networks

The design approach Michael acquired and developed as an architect has intuitively informed his approach to making photographs.

In composing an image, the essential concept is strengthened and refined through the elimination of superfluous visual elements. What is retained is there to communicate the emotional impact of the subject, the quality of light or sense of place with intentional clarity.

Michael’s elegant body of work is united by this particular way of seeing and interpreting the world in the careful composition of his photographs.

The influence of his architectural sensibilities is directly evident in subjects where the visual elements are often abstracted to express a tectonic idea. In many of his landscape photographs, geological structures are clearly recognized in architectural terms. Michael’s photographic travels have yielded a series of expansive landscape images characterised by their simplicity and serenity.

Michael Elkan’s prints are offered as signed, limited editions. All prints are of the highest archival quality. This means they are guaranteed not to fade or change colour for at least 110 years when displayed out of direct sunlight and mounted under glass or ultra-violet filtering laminate. This archival standard is attained by using the latest pigment inks on heavy weight, museum grade cotton rag paper. The latest ink-jet technology produces prints of exceptional colour depth and dynamic range. Michael’s large prints are made by Fidelis Art Prints in Vancouver.  Fidelis’s clients include internationally acclaimed photographic artists, Roy Arden and Fred Herzog.

Each print is individually calibrated, proofed and inspected by the artist before being signed. Prints larger that 12 x 18 inches are also provided with a signed printer’s certificate, authenticating the printing date and edition number.
